A specialist unit providing support for profoundly deaf children from all over Kent using the ‘Total Communication’ approach.
The Unit is an integral part of our school which introduces speech, sign language, mime, gesture, facial expression, listening skills and anything that helps to get the message across to profoundly deaf children.
Children with a hearing impairment benefit from the expertise of the highly qualified and experienced teachers staffing the Unit. We also employ Communication Assistants (COMMAs) who are well qualified, skilled in signing and provide excellent levels of support. This ensures that the children who attend the Unit are as fully included in school life as possible. We greatly value the contribution to school life that the Unit brings.
Children are admitted to the unit at the request of the Local Authority, in consultation with The Headteacher, the Parents, the Sensory Impaired Service and any other agencies involved with the children.
We currently have spaces for up to 14 children in the Unit. Parents of children with hearing impairment will need more information than can be given here and should contact the school for further details.
Visits to the school and the Unit are actively encouraged and warmly welcomed.

CURRICULUM
Children in Early Years will follow the Foundation Curriculum with support from HIU staff. Older children, who have all their lessons in mainstream, will continue to have support from HIU staff in class and for tutorials. As usual regular speech and language tutorials will continue for all hearing impaired children.
TOPIC THIS TERM – QUESTIONS
This term, children in Y2 and Y3 will be working on improving the understanding of the following questions using our colour coded system:
- Who? (pink),
- What? (orange),
- What doing? (yellow),
- Where? (blue)
- When? (brown)
We can provide ideas to support this at home but simply sharing a picture book together and asking these kinds of questions will help!
LITERACY ACTIVITIES
We will be working on specific individual core vocabulary daily. We will send a copy of your child’s vocabulary home each time it changes. We will continue to set homework on Tuesdays and ask for it to be returned the following Tuesday. As usual, we will test spellings every Friday and set new ones.
NUMERACY ACTIVITIES
In maths we will be concentrating on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We will learn the number bonds to 20 and pairs of multiples of tens that make 100.
